Adventures in Winter Driving
So I'm writing this entry from a hotel room in Burley. You must be asking why? Well I decided to brave the winter roads and drive home for Christmas today. When I looked at the forecast it said there will be snow all week, so I figured whether today or tomorrow, I will run into bad roads so why not just get going. Everything was good, in fact perfect and then suddenly it wasn't. I came upon a bad part of the road almost instantly. I turned a bend at normal freeway speeds and hit a snow drift! I started to slide and tried to regain control of my car, but the car in front of me hit their brakes, causing me to hit mine and I was sliding again. There was nothing I could do, I knew I was going off the road. Luckily, I didn't panic and over correct, or I could have flipped the car. It didn't take too long to get a hold of a tow truck, but I had to wait for them because they were very busy and coming from Twin (I was close to Burley). I think from the time I slide off to the time I got back on the road, 6 other cars and trucks slide off and had to be towed, luckily no one was hurt. I started to debate if I should go the rest of the way to Idaho Falls or just stay in Pocatello with my Dad. After I got out of the ditch I decided I wasn't going anyway. I heard the roads were much worse ahead and things were starting to freeze. I decided to just go the few miles to Burley and stay the night. Plus I was pretty frozen and wanted a HOT shower. So here I am sitting in the Best Western in Burley. A little boring, but I got a pretty nice room and room service! I will head out again tomorrow and hope for better luck.

Oh wow! That sure sounds pretty scary. I'm glad the ordeal turned out alright and you are safe. Well I hope you have a safer drive in the morning.
I guess I would take being stranded at an airport for hours on end over being stuck in the middle of nowhere with my car in a ditch! While at the airport today I heard Southwest cancel all flights to Portland. They also announced there were not flights out to Portland for another 3 days. People were freaking out as word spread that the rental car places were sold out and there was little hope for getting home for Christmas. Crazy eh?
What an adventure, glad you and car are all okay. See you soon!
You were very wise to stay....the wind is drifting the snow and the snow is still coming.
I agree with mom, you are much safer sitting in a hotel room bored. Doesn't look like it's too bad of a room though.
so glad that you are okay!
I was loving the snowy-white Christmas until I read your story. Now I'm feeling a bit guilty for praying so hard for snow and then being so elated when it just pounded us for days! I didn't have to drive though! I hope Christmas was great when you finally arrived. I missed you!
