My Mom's Best Advice

I decided to record for posterity the best advice my mother ever gave me...and no it's not the time when I was 18 years old and I decided I wanted a tattoo. Though that was pretty good advice too. My mom just looked at me when I told her my desires and paused. (You could almost see the wheels turning in her head as she was trying to think of how to best handle my declaration.) Eventually she calmly said, "Well just don't get an ugly one 'cause you'll have it forever." I took it to heart and spent a couple years trying to decide what I wanted, but nothing was ever just right. After many failed ideas I realized, I didn't want a tattoo forever, I just wanted one while I was young and thought they were cool. I have to say, I'm proud to be one of the fewer and fewer people who don't have a tattoo these days.

No, the best advice my mom ever gave me was "a guy can NEVER be too nice." She was talking about how girls always say they don't want to go out with a guy because "he is too nice." She felt that was silly. She told me about a couple she was friends with and how the guy always would do things for the girl that my mom felt the girl should be able to do for herself. IE...the guy getting up in the middle of doing something and getting the girl a glass of water, even though she wasn't doing anything, just because he was nice. My mom said it was annoying to watch them together. However, my mom realized the "trying to impress each other phase" fades overtime and when that happens the truly nice guy will still be nice.

I find this to be a great truth in life (for both guys and girls) and more people should learn this lesson! I'm grateful I listened. THANKS MOM!

Amen on no tattoos! It'll get old and wrinkly when we get old and wrinkly...gross! :)
Nice advice from your mom; hopefully we can all remember to continually do those little nice things for our significant other, no matter how old we get.

Thank you....sometimes as a mom I forget that once in a while I maybe did or said something that was helpful and maybe even wise. It is awesome to know things said and done make a difference and can be helpful. love you, mom!

PS....I am glad you decided not to get a tatoo...and I agree those who don't have them are the minority!

I'm in the 'no tatoo club' too, and grateful to be.
You have a wise mother.

That is great advice, and I don't have any tattoos either.

Maybe I'll use your mom's advice when one of my kids want a tattoo.

Also, I agree with the nice guy idea. I don't think we should just be nice when someone needs us or it is easy, we should always be nice.
