Concerts tickets as birthday presents equal bad luck

At least they do if they are for me.  Last year for my birthday, Paul got me tickets to the U2 concert that was supposed to be this last July.  That didn't work out because Bono had to have emergency back surgery and the concert got cancelled.  (It has been rescheduled June 2011)  Now he got me tickets to the Florence and the Machine concert in Oakland on Nov. 5; this time there may be a RIOT!!!

Seriously!  And I don't know mean the kind of riot where people are all excited about something and they get too rambunctious.  I'm talking about the violent, hateful, destructive kind.

There was a tragic police shooting that involved a white BART police officer and a young black man, the young man was killed.  I won't get into the politics of the whole thing, because no matter what you believe happened, I don't think rioting is warranted.  You can read more about it here.

Anyway, after the incident riots happened in Oakland, resulting in smashed cars and storefronts, looting, fires, etc.  The city was prepared for the same thing to happen when the verdict was delivered last month (the cop was found guilty of manslaughter), but luckily they weren't as bad, but still happened.

Now the sentencing is scheduled to take place on Nov. 5 the same day as the concert and once again things are expected to get bad.  The concert venue is pretty much in the heart of where this would all take place.  Yeah, I'm NOT going if there will be rioting and there goes my birthday present!

The concert is still a few months away, so maybe the sentencing will be pushed back, maybe the mood will change or the concert will be rescheduled.  We will see.

But the moral of this post is...if you are going to give me a present for my birthday (Oct. 23) make sure it's not concert tickets!

Oh bother! What can you do? Sorry about that Tash! Well think about what you might want for your birthday then.

I'm confident the sentencing will get pushed back since the judge is going to hear oral arguments on the 5th. He will probably take some time to deliberate. We and the 3,000+ other fans will be just fine. The small venue is going to make the show awesome!

Look at it this way - if it gets all crazy down there, we'll get to go home with some free shoes from Footlocker. ha ha ha get it? OK OK I will not participate in looting...
