PN Hawaii: Day 3

Today the saga continues in the search for kalipokeono, my long lost love that I only meet once on the beach in a passing glance! She might not even recognize me since they say all ninjas look the same. The topical fish from yesterday's snorkel adventure told me to consult the wise honu or sea turtles at a nearby beach named Liickilaaliiwatever. I arrived just as a honu rode a wave right onto the shoreline to graze on the moss and soak up the warm sun. Apparently it was the same one Edward rode in on. "wassup my bruddah," Edward exclaimed in pigeon, the local hawaiian dialect. Here is the reunion.

(Trust me there are even more magical turtle pics; they will be posted when we return to the main land.

The honu took Edward out to the surf for "story talking" which is hawaiian for chatting. Here are regular board surfers and paddle surfers. Closer to shore one could see the silhouettes of turtles bouncing in the waves.

The great Honu told us to travel to Wiamea Falls to see if Kali was swimming in the water there. On the hike there we noticed wild chickens. We've seen them roaming all over the island even in the most populated areas. It’s been reported that a 1992 hurricane destroyed a number of chicken farms leaving them free to roam. Wikipedia also suggests another possible theory: “Others say that sugarcane plantation laborers in the late 1800s and early 1900s brought and raised chickens and many got loose over the years and multiplied.” Whatever the reason the are a lot of chickens. Cluck cluck cluck!

Here is a shot of the falls. The water is over thirty feet deep, Pocket ninja swam over to the base of the falls but there was no sign of Kali.

After the long hike, we ventured to honolulu for some trinket shopping and tourist watching. Using another tip from our native friend, we stopped at the Yama fish market for some "Ono" or tasty foods. Edward chatted up the counter girl and got the low down on the best local dishes of the day. We gorged on Kalua pig, lau lau chicken and a variety of poke. I picked up some haupia or coconut custard pudding. That is a mini sized one below. The portion was huge! Edward skipped the custard and busied himself with the chickens in the parking lot.

We strolled over to the downtown area to check out the Royal palace, which is the only one in the united states. It hadelectric power before the White House. Here's a cool tree made up of external roots, it looks very ghost like.

We headed over to the state supreme court. King kamehmameha gave us general direction to head out, but traffic here is not for the faint of heart so we returned to base. It rained like mad in the way back. No wonder the hills are so lush and green. We will continue the search tomorrow....

Ninja vanish!
